Working From Home Rules

Since I’m back freelancing and working from home, I’ve developed some rules to help keep me on track.

  1. Get up and get ready for work. I follow the same morning routine as when I was going to an office. This is important to get my day started.
  2. Get to work on time. 9AM every day I’m at my desk and ready to work. I even refer to it as going to work, not just going to my office.
  3. Dress for success. While I have given up wearing a tie at home, I still dress in slacks, dress shirt and dress shoes every day. Being in business attire puts me in a business state of mind and reinforces my self-image as a professional.
  4. Go, “Home,” at the end of the day. One of the downsides to having my workspace 6-feet away is that I am tempted to just keep working. It’s important that I have office hours, and that I go home for lunch and at the end of the day.

What are your work at home rules?
